âHey,â Nick said, taking a seat next to me on his front porch. âI didn't agree to host an at-home wedding reception just so you could sneak away whenever you wanted. What are you doing out here all alone?â
âFighting a headache,â I said, shifting my focus to the ground. I didnât want to look my father in the eyes; I didnât want to run the risk of him seeing the dark circles, the dried tears, or the remnants of mascara trails on my cheeks.
He put his arm around my shoulder and smiled. âMy son is married, and now my little girl is on her way to the altar herself. Itâs incredible how fast you two are growing up.â
âMmm-hmm.â
Nick stared at me for a moment, his brow creasing.
âWhat's bothering you, Steph?â
âNothing.â
âJob-hunt anxiety?â
âNo.â
âStressed about the fall production?â
âNope, it's coming along well. Don't worry about me. I'm fine.â
âWould you mind if I took a guess?â
âIâm sure youâre going to anyway,â I said, knowing he wasn't going to budge until he'd figured it out.
âYour fiancé has been in town for three days, and heâs spent less time with you than Nate,â he said. âCase and point: the reception started an hour ago, and Christopher hasn't even noticed you're gone. Your incredibly handsome, gay best friend has been monopolizing every moment of Chrisâ time. And now you're out here wondering⦠is it possible that my fiancé is playing for both teams?â
âHe only plays for one team.â
âAre you sure?â
âYes. I'm positive.â
And thatâs not even what was bothering me. Chris had nothing to do with my concerns. It was Alex. It was always Alex.
âI dunno, hon,â he said. âHe's giving off some pretty heavy vibes.â
âDad, I am certain Christopher only plays for one team. Period. The end.â
âOh God,â he closed his eyes. âYou know he's gay?â
âYes, but I'm not sure he does, so keep your voice down.â
Nick's laugh echoed through the street.
âHoney, why are you engaged to him?â
âHe proposed to me! He loves me.â
âOr he's in denial.â
âYeah,â I agreed, shaking my head. âThat too.â
âDo you love him?â
âNo.â I shrugged. âI mean⦠of course I do. I have love for him. I love him like I love Nate, or Bridget. It pales in comparison to the love I have forââ
âAlex?â he asked. âSteph, you can't marry Christopher. Surely you know that.â
Cal turned the corner, spotting us in our hideaway spot on the porch. Heâd never looked so handsome, dressed in a black tux and bowtie. He climbed up on the porch and eyed us.
âI wondered where you two ran off to.â
âAvoiding all the noise,â I said, looking out to the road.
âWell,â Nick stood up. âI'm gonna get back to the party. Don't sit out here too long. Youâll need to face the music sooner or later.â And just as he started to walk away, he turned back. âBy the way, Steph, you said have, not had.â
âIâm sorry?â
âYou said âit pales in comparison to the love I have.â Thatâs present tense. If thatâs not an answer to your dilemma, then I donât know what is.
